Beast of Reincarnation: Black Screen After the Rangifer Fight

One report, no replies, no developer response, and no posted workaround. It is on this site because it happens at the first Nushi — the boss more players reach than any other — and nothing else on the internet acknowledges it.

Short answer

Nobody has answered it. One player reports the screen going black after the Rangifer fight and staying black — no crash, no error, no return to gameplay. The report has drawn no replies and no developer response, and nobody has said whether the save survives it.

Where this is being asked · In the launch bug megathread, once. It gets a page here rather than a row on the known-issues list because of where it happens: Rangifer is the first Nushi and the achievement for it sits at the top of the completion curve, so more players reach that fight than any other in the game.

Evidence

The answer, broken into claims

A grade describes sourcing, not truth. Inferred means we concluded it and the reasoning is shown; unverified means someone asserted it and nobody stands behind it.

  • UnverifiedThe game can hang on a black screen after the Rangifer fight.

One reporter in the launch bug megathread, no replies, no developer response, no platform stated.

  • OfficialRangifer is the first Nushi and the fight more players complete than any other.

Valve’s achievement manifest: the Nushi kill achievements descend in unlock rate and this one leads them. First-party, and independent of anything said about the bug.

  • InferredNothing establishes whether the save survives it.

Ours, from absence. The report does not say, nobody replied, and the game autosaves — so the outcome could be anything from a lost minute to a repeated boss.

§01

What was reported

The screen goes black after the Rangifer boss fight and stays black. The reporter describes no crash and no error dialogue — the process keeps running and the game never comes back. That distinction matters when you are sitting in front of it: a crash at least returns you to the desktop with a save intact somewhere behind it, and this does not tell you whether anything was written.

§02

What nobody has said, including the part you most want

Whether the save survives. Nobody has posted whether force-quitting and reloading puts you after the fight, before it, or nowhere useful at all — and since the game autosaves, the difference between those three is the difference between an annoyance and a repeated boss fight. There is also no platform on the report, so it is not known whether this is a PC problem, a console one, or specific to a driver. One person described it and nothing has been added since.

§03

Why the boss name is spelled the way it is

Rangifer is the name every published source uses and none of them read it off the game client. Valve's achievement manifest does confirm the boss exists and is the first Nushi — the internal id `ACH_NUSHI_SHIKA` names a deer in Japanese, and `shika` is a deer — so the fight is first-party attested even though the display name comes to us second-hand. That is a stronger position than any wiki page about this boss, and it is still not a confirmed in-game string.

§04

What to do, stated as what it is

No workaround has been posted, so there is nothing here to follow. If you meet this, the useful thing is not on this page: it is the thread, where a second report with a platform and a note on whether the save survived would turn an unanswerable entry into an answerable one. The link is below. This page exists so that a player searching the exact symptom finds an acknowledgement rather than nothing, which is the state of the rest of the internet on it.

Expiry condition

What would have to change for this answer to be wrong

An answer about a live-service game without this is an answer with a hidden expiry date.

A second player reports it, anyone states whether the save survives, or a patch note mentions it. A single report with no replies is the weakest thing this site publishes, and it is published because the alternative — a player searching this symptom and finding silence — is worse.

Citations

Every source, with its date

A complaint posted before 30 July 2026 describes the playtest, not the game you bought, and a source whose publication date nobody captured cannot show that it postdates launch either. Both are flagged rather than quietly mixed in.

  • That one player reported an infinite black screen after the Rangifer fight, with no crash and no return to gameplay, and that the report drew no replies and no developer response. Read 2026-08-05; the post carried a relative timestamp, so the date is approximate. It establishes that the report exists and nothing about cause, platform or frequency.

  • That the Rangifer kill is the most-earned Nushi achievement in the shipped game, which is why a single report about this fight is worth a page. First-party and re-checkable in one request.
