Is Beast of Reincarnation a Soulslike?

A contested label rather than a fact about the game. The publisher calls it an action RPG fusing real-time and turn-based combat. Here is what is actually established about the combat, so you can decide which word you want to use.

Short answer

This is a contested label rather than a fact about the game, and we are not going to settle a genre argument by assertion — the publisher calls it an action RPG that fuses real-time and turn-based combat, and the mechanics below are what is actually established.

Where this is being asked · Everywhere the game is discussed in launch week — Steam discussions, video comments, and the recommendation threads where "should I buy this" turns immediately into an argument about what it is. It is a genuine question with a genuinely contested answer, which is a different thing from an unanswered one.

Evidence

The answer, broken into claims

A grade describes sourcing, not truth. Inferred means we concluded it and the reasoning is shown; unverified means someone asserted it and nobody stands behind it.

  • OfficialThe publisher calls it an action RPG fusing real-time and turn-based combat.

Steam store listing, read 2026-08-05. The word soulslike does not appear.

  • CorroboratedCombat is parry-centred, with a Down Gauge, difficulty modes and a light death penalty.

Two launch-week hands-on videos from the same creator covering combat and difficulty separately.

  • InferredThe genre label itself is contested and this page does not adjudicate it.

Our position. No source settles it, the requirements readers attach to the word differ, and the underlying mechanics are the same whichever word wins.

§01

What the publisher calls it

The Steam listing describes a single-player action RPG and, in the publisher’s own words, "a fusion of real-time and turn-based combat", framed as a one-person, one-dog action RPG. The word soulslike does not appear. That does not settle anything — publishers pick their own framing — but it is the only first-party position on the question and it is not the soulslike one.

§02

The mechanics people point at when they say yes

These are established from launch-week hands-on coverage rather than from genre argument.

  • Combat is parry-centred: parrying funds FP, and there is a Down Gauge that governs staggering an enemy.
  • There are rest points in the world, and an upgrade hub you return to.
  • There is a death penalty, and there are difficulty modes — including one that lowers the demand, which is precisely the feature the strictest definitions of the genre exclude.
§03

The mechanic people point at when they say no

The game has a tactical layer sitting alongside real-time combat, which is the publisher’s own framing and is not a soulslike structure. Whether that layer can be declined and the game played as pure action is not established — the clearest video framing tactical menus against parrying is 67 seconds long and pre-release, dated 19 July 2026, so it describes a build nobody shipped. Anyone telling you confidently that you can skip it, or that you cannot, is ahead of the evidence.

§04

Why this page does not pick

Genre labels are useful shorthand and terrible claims. "Soulslike" carries different requirements for different readers — some mean stamina-gated melee and a fog gate, some mean any hard game with a parry. The evidence above is the same either way, and it is more useful to you than our vote would be.

Expiry condition

What would have to change for this answer to be wrong

An answer about a live-service game without this is an answer with a hidden expiry date.

The publisher adopts or rejects the label in its own marketing, or the question narrows to something checkable — for example whether the tactical layer can be turned off, which is currently unestablished and would settle most of the argument on its own.

Citations

Every source, with its date

A complaint posted before 30 July 2026 describes the playtest, not the game you bought, and a source whose publication date nobody captured cannot show that it postdates launch either. Both are flagged rather than quietly mixed in.
